12th October 1835: Methodist missionaries David Cargill and William Cross spotted Lakeba and landed there on their way from Vavau. In 1835 June, the Active, having taken five missionaries to Tonga, brought supplies and letters to those at Lakeba in returning to Tonga, however, the ship was wrecked on a reef near Moce, within forty miles of Lakeba. All hands were saved, and were unmolested.
