Sandalwood and tortoise-shell traders create epidemic in 1819

Two American vessels are known to have called at Fiji in 1819, seeking beche-de-mer, sandalwood and tortoise-shell; and shortly afterwards an epidemic of sickness, known among the Fijians as the vudi coro, made its appearance.
